There’s a lot to consider when you are moving house and getting organised will make things much easier. Choosing the right removals company, packing, storage, in some cases organising schools the list goes on… It’s a good idea to also put changing utilities high on your to do list.
Create a list of current utilities
Create a handy list of all your utilities including any logins, contact telephone numbers, account details and meter readings. You may also want to include a section for notes or a tick box so you know you have contacted them. Check out our moving tips and download a copy of our notifications list to help you get started.
Your list should include providers for electricity, gas, water, council tax, telephone, broadband provider, cable or satellite TV service and home security.
New Utilities
Depending where you are moving to, for some services you may be able to continue with their service once you have moved to your new house. For those services you can contact the company and inform them of the move and your removal date, you may then have to submit a meter reading on moving day.
If you need to find new providers you should carefully research your options and check the conditions and their reviews. Before notifying your existing provider that you wish to terminate the service and contacting the new provider.
Contact Providers
Once you have your list completed and your removal date the next job is to contact the providers to arrange the transfer, closure or setup of service. The earlier you do this the better.
Final Meter Readings
Moving day is usually a very busy and often stressful time, but, don’t forget to take your last meter readings before you move and the meter readings at the new house. You can record the readings on your checklist and we also recommend taking a photo of the meter. These readings should then be passed to the respective providers.
